Michael Cahalan is Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at UC Irvine and pioneered investigations of ion channels in cells of the immune system using electrophysiological and optical imaging methods. Dr. Cahalan is an internationally recognized authority in ion channel characterization and pharmacology and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles. In 1989-1990 he was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt prize for a senior scientist, and in 1997 he received the Athalie Clark Research Achievement Award for excellence in research from the University of California Irvine. In 2000, Dr. Cahalan received the Cole award from the Biophysical society for achievements in the ion channel field. He served as Chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics from 1991-1995, and is currently the Department’s Chairman, He served as President of the Society of General Physiologists in 1999, as reviewing editor for the Biophysical Journal since 1994, as Advisory Editor of the Journal of General Physiology since 2002, and as a member of the Physiological Reviews Editorial Board since 2002. Dr. Cahalan received his PhD in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Washington.
