George Gutman, PhD

Dr. Gutman is Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of California Irvine. He received his undergraduate degree in Zoology from Columbia College and, before earning his PhD in Immunology from Stanford, spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the Institute Pasteur in Paris. Dr. Gutman carried out postdoctoral research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research (Melbourne) before taking on his current position at the UC Irvine. His research has spanned the areas of immunopathology and immunogenetics, molecular evolution, protein structure and function, and gene expression. He has been the recipient of a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health, as well as research grants from the NIH, the American Cancer Society, and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. He has authored over 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and is co-inventor on four U.S. patents. His recent research focuses on the transcriptional and translational regulation of ion channels, and on their evolution and comparative gene structure.
